THIRTY-TWO (32) ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS are located throughout the district and provide the foundation for life-long learning through a variety of innovative approaches to learning and teaching. While each school is unique and may have developed its own learning “theme,” all schools continue to adhere to the basic core curriculum.

District 205 offers a variety of specialized educational opportunities called THEME SCHOOLS, intended to draw or attract students to schools from throughout the district. Theme school programs are offered in the areas of the arts, language immersion, and the Montessori method of teaching.

MIDDLE SCHOOLS or three K- 8 Theme Schools. Middle school students are organized into teams of approximately 150 students with four or five core teachers. Students rotate through their classes with other members of their team. This promotes a sense of community and belonging, while allowing teachers to communicate with each other about students on their team.

Four traditional HIGH SCHOOLS are located within the district, offering core courses and electives for college preparation, vocational or general education studies. In addition, numerous extracurricular activities are available to students. An alternative high school located at Roosevelt Community Education Center is available to students who require a non-traditional high school environment.

An ACADEMIC GIFTED program which seeks to identify and nurture student potential through the use of specialized curriculum serves students in grades 1 through 12. (Testing is required for entry into the Gifted Program.)

The CAPA (Creative & Performing Arts) program offers an opportunity for students in grades 9 through 12 to develop their talents in music, dance, theater and the fine arts. (An audition is required for entry into the CAPA program.)

The Rockford Public Schools SPECIAL EDUCATION Department provides a range of services for special needs children from ages three (3) to 21. The district’s success in serving its special needs population has made it a model for the state.

TRANSITIONAL BILINGUAL EDUCATION (TBE) and the TRANSITIONAL PROGRAM of INSTRUCTION (TPI) are provided to serve the needs of limited-English proficient students beginning in preschool. The programs exist to develop the English language proficiency of students without the loss of native language skills.
